It is the truth we are searching for, truth which sets us free; truth which brings us into that place of internal rest. And holding to the teaching of Jesus, aligning ourselves with God’s Word, is the key.
In CREATING NEW MINDSETS we looked at the importance of aligning our thought patterns with God—essential in developing internal tranquillity. (If you need to go back and read this section, click on the link.) But in addition to getting our thinking straight, we have to focus on what comes out of our mouths, because there is power in the spoken word. From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled;
with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. [Proverbs 18: 20-21] |
QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK… What does the Bible say about our words? How do I partner with God? HAVE YOU GOT A QUESTION? |
However, there is more than the observable, temporal world; the Bible makes it clear there is also a spiritual realm, which is just as real; in fact, the greater reality. And as Christians, we believe we have been raised up with Christ, and we are seated in heavenly places with Him [Ephesians 2:6], in other words we have access to the realm of Heaven, as well as living in this temporal world. In fact, our job as His children is to release those greater Kingdom realities in our spheres of influence in the earth.

A small analogy is that when designers understand and use the law of aerodynamics in making an aircraft, they in effect release a truth which supersedes the law of gravity. Gravity, the principle which states that anything that goes up must come down, remains true and real; but to fly an aeroplane, another law comes into effect which means that it is possible for something to go up and remain there.
Genesis tells the story of an elderly childless couple who were promised a son by God. The book of Romans describes how Abraham faced the temporal ‘facts’, but was also convinced of a Heavenly reality: Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body
was as good as dead – since he was about a hundred years old – and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what He had promised. [Romans 4: 19-21] |
Mankind was made in the image of God and our words also have creative power—either for good or evil. [Check out these verses: Proverbs 12:18, 25; 13:2-3; 18:20.]
And like the Law of Gravity, it doesn’t matter whether you believe in it or not, this divine law still takes an effect, it has been written by God into the very fabric of things. This is why non-believers can have great results from ‘positive speaking’; they are unwittingly tapping into a created principle. |
Our words have power, creative power—to fix us in a negative state or open doors to kingdom possibilities. www.rhythmsofgraceuk.org/the-power-of-the-spoken-word Click to Tweet |
We have all had experience of the power of negative words.

SPEAK BLESSING OVER OTHERS
Not only are our words to have a positive effect in our own lives, but we are called to release blessing over others. When we speak good things to, or about, others; our words become a means of grace to the people around us.
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth,
but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. [Ephesians 4:29] |
