THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSONScripture makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force, energy or influence, but a Person.
Jesus used the personal masculine pronoun when speaking of Him [eg. John 14:15,16,26; 15:26,27; 16:7-14], and said He would come alongside the disciples as the Comforter—taking the place of Jesus. Personal characteristics were attributed to Him—a will, thoughts, feelings and activity [eg. Matthew 4:1, 12:31-32; John 14:26, 16:8-11; Acts 13:2; Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13, 12:11; Ephesians 4:30; Colossians 1:8; Isaiah 63:10] |
Not only is the Spirit a Person, but the Bible reveals Him to be the third member of the Trinity, the Godhead. Jesus clearly taught that the Spirit was one with the Father and Son [eg. John 14: 16,26, 16:7-13], but was separate from them, [eg. John 1:33, 14:16,26, 15:26; Ephesians 2:18]. Christians are commanded to baptise in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit [Matthew 8:19].
And the Holy Spirit shows both divine attributes and actions [eg. Luke 1:35; Romans 1:4, 8:11,26; Hebrews 9:14; 2 Peter 1:21; Genesis 1:1-2; Psalm 139:7-10] |
