NEW SERIESTwilight is the time when it is neither really day or night, the in-between time, when it becomes hard to see clearly. In the gloaming shapes become blurred, shadows increase, and fanciful ideas take hold. It is so easy for us to live all our lives in a ‘twilight world', with our eyes fixed on the past or looking forward to the future, but never really living in the present. And just as in times past, without the benefit of electric light, the twilight fostered all sorts of fears in our ancestors, so our ‘twilight living’ works against us being at rest. The present moment is precious—a gift to us, which will never come again. I often used to say to my children when they were young, and complaining of boredom, ‘What can you do now, that you won’t be able to do next week, next month, next year?’ The same holds true for us as adults, we don’t know what the future holds, it’s in God’s hands, but we do have now, today, this minute—and it’s worth celebrating. There is much interest currently in the practice of mindfulness which emphasises the blessing of focusing on the present moment. The problem with these explorations is that they miss out the most important and fundamental thing which undergirds each minute of our day: the presence, purpose and sustaining power of God. All things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together [Colossians 1:16] TODAY IS A GIFTToday is a gift to us from our loving Heavenly Father. He holds it all together and imbues it with His presence and purpose and power. And He invites us to walk through it with Him. What has He got for you and me that is unique—just for today? What ‘secrets’ does He want to reveal? What ‘treasure’ has He got for us to discover? What partnership does He offer for this period of time? This new series on Bread for the Journey will explore how we can be more engaged in, and celebrate the present. Do join me on Fridays at 3pm (GMT) This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. [Psalm 118:24 NKJV] THIS WEEK’S GRACE RHYTHM
NEXT WEEK: FOCUS ON THE PRESENCE Celebrating the present moment cannot be separated from celebrating the Presence, for God fills everything with Himself... ALIVE AND GRATEFUL!
