In a world without electric lights, the dark held all sorts of terrors in ancient Britain, real,
imagined and supernatural. ‘Powers of darkness’ were particularly thought to pose a threat,
and numerous rites and incantations developed as a means of dealing with them.
Halloween celebrations, all three, dangerous positions.
The truth is that there are real ‘dark’ supernatural powers which are at work in the distress and destruction in our world. However we do not need to be afraid, for there is a higher truth:
I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Surely He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
(Jesus) made a public spectacle of them,
triumphing over them by the cross.
