It had proved impossible to keep all the Law, all the time. In fact at the very time the Law was given, 3000 people failed spectacularly, and were slain [Exodus 32:1-28]. The attempt to be right with God through self-effort was doomed to failure.
The Lord, however, promised a solution:
"I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. [Ezekiel 36:26,27]
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?
The message of the Cross is that Jesus died so that we could be forgiven for missing the mark.
The message of Pentecost is that the Holy Spirit is poured out so we can live a new life.
And it’s all by grace – the totally unmerited favour of God!
