CHRISTMAS IS COMING...
Adapted from ‘Let the Trees Rejoice!’
Prophecy can be about fore-telling the future – telling events before they have happened; it can also be forth-telling – expressing the heart of God in a given situation. In both cases, if something is truly prophetic it takes a spiritual reality and expresses it in words, images or actions, and by faith releases that reality in the physical, material world.
When Jesus came to earth, He brought his Kingdom with Him. Humanity was to be delivered from the Kingdom of Darkness and this liberation would extend to the whole earth, making all creation rejoice. The Bible gives a graphic prophetic picture of that celebration:
Burst into song... you forests and all your trees, for the LORD has redeemed …….
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn-bush will grow the pine tree,
and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign,
which will not be destroyed.
It seems the pine tree was prophesied to be a sign of the coming kingdom. As our Christmas trees are already visual expressions of celebration, if we take this long-held custom, and invest it with faith and expectation, our decorated trees can become prophetic declarations…… that the Messiah has come - bringing His Kingdom with Him – and one day every knee will bow before Him.
And we can pray for that revelation to accompany every tree in our neighbourhood: Emmanuel has come!
