Happiness is very much bound up with appreciation. The absence of gratitude breeds negativity, grumbling, fault-finding and self-pity; and these attitudes tend to multiply through their effect on the people around us. Conversely, a grateful heart produces joy and lightness in the soul, thus changing our personal climate, and the immediate atmosphere. By developing an attitude of gratitude we can start a quiet revolution – infecting the world with joy, one grateful response at a time.
Today we continue building a new habit of gratitude with another excerpt from my book, Alive and Grateful, a 30 day exploration of appreciation (see previous post for more information).
Living in a world dominated by commercial images, many of us feel we don’t measure up.
Maybe you don’t live in a home which looks like it comes from a glossy magazine
supplement, but it’s your home, and there are some things in it which make you glad: a
washing machine perhaps, or a special ornament; a comfortable bed or a log fire; the view
from the window or a family pet?
Perhaps you have your heart set on something better? It’s good to dream, but don’t put off
gratitude to another season; make sure you get the most out of the present.
In addition, the real adornments in a home are not the beautiful furnishings, but the people
who live there. By working on this attitude you will be good to live with.
Have a good look around and SWAP* your grumbles for pleasure in ten aspects of your
PASS IT ON: Open your home to others - invite a friend or neighbour in for coffee. This is
about hospitality, not about entertaining.

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
